The Fire Wish by Amber Lough

The Fire Wish - Amber Lough
Title: The Fire Wish
Author: Amber Lough
Publisher: Random House
Source: Netgalley
Rating: 5 Stars

Synopsis:

A jinni. A princess. And the wish that changes everything. . . . Beautifully written and accessible fantasy for fans of Tamora Pierce, Rachel Hartman, and Laini Taylor.

In this romantic and evocative fantasy, Najwa is a jinni, training to be a spy in the war against the humans. Zayele is a human on her way to marry a prince of Baghdad—which she’ll do anything to avoid. So she captures Najwa and makes a wish. With a rush of smoke and fire, they fall apart and re-form—as each other. A jinni and a human, trading lives. Both girls must play their parts among enemies who would kill them if the deception were ever discovered—enemies including the young men Najwa and Zayele are just discovering they might love.

My Thoughts

This is a beautiful tale about love and learning that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Magical settings and a unique cast of characters made this a truly unforgettable story. I only wish it was much longer than it was. The premise itself was very unique. There are not many stories with a jinni as a main character are hard to come by and the author really fleshed out this character and made her relatable and more human.

Najwa is a jinni and a spy so there isn't much that surprises her except for the wish that one human named Zaylee makes her grant. I loved Najwa she was brilliant and seeing her try to pretend to be human was so much fun. The best aspect was seeing how these two learned about each others culture and came to understand each other better in the process.

Zaylee is a sweet girl who got stuck in a terrible situation. She was desperate, but at times it was hard to tell whether or not she didn't jump out of the frying pan and into the fire when she decided to trade places with Najwa. Pretending to be a jinni with no real magical powers is one tough feat.

There was most definitely some romance going on in this story as well. My personal favorite was Najwa and Kamal as they were too sweet and perfect for each other. I liked that although there was a good dose of it the romance didn't take over the whole story.

This is a magical read that any fantasy fan will not want to miss!

 My Thoughts

Two very different people with one dangerous goal.

The setting was exciting and mysterious starting out on the streets of a society filled with secrets, danger, and one cheeky girl who is navigating it all. This was a fast paced story filled with a whole lot of action and a good sprinkling of mystery to top it off.

Kyra is a no nonsense kind of girl. She grew up having to be tough and its taken its toll. She does what she has to in order to survive, but still helps those in need whenever possible. I liked her gutsy attitude and the her confidence in her abilities. Kyra was such a fun character to get to know and I didn't want her story to end.

Tristam was a mystery in the beginning, but the more we learned about him the more it was obvious that he and Kyra were very much alike. He was devious, but would do whatever it took to protect his friends. He was not very trustful, but getting to see these two learn to appreciate and trust one another was an adventure all in itself.

For those looking for a thrilling action packed story this is the story for you!

My Thoughts

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas except when your the mate of a Pride shifter.

What better setting for a sexy shifter romance than the city of sin itself. Apart from the romance I find the creatures that shifters fight such as goblins and leprachauns an exciting addition to this fun series. The author has their own spin on these creatures and even the shifters themselves that make them unique. While I love the bit of action we get to see, the thing that really makes these books shine is the amount of drama and sexy shifters that get packed into the pages.

The heroine Jezebel is a very relatable character. She is not perfect by any means, but rather than dwell on this fact she does her best to live life to the fullest. She also doesn't let the ignorance of others get her down. I really admire her kindness and courage so it is easy to see how Brandon could so easily fall for her. The best part was getting to see the growth in Jezebel throughout the book. At first she was a bit insecure and although she didn't take crap from anyone else she still didn't believe she would ever deserve someone like Brandon. By the end she knew that she deserved all that and more just like everyone else and let those who said otherwise know it. I couldn't have been more proud.

Brandon is a sweet and patient man who knew what he wanted and went after it. I loved how caring he was and that he always let Jezebel know how beautiful she was and never let her get down on herself. He cherished and protected her, what more could a woman want. He wasn't perfect by any means, but a bit of growly possessiveness from your very on alpha isn't so bad.

The heat rating on this book is through the roof and if a smokin hot romance is what your after look no further than "Jezebel's Lion".

Defy by Sara B. Larson

Defy - Sara B. Larson
Title: Defy
Author: Sara B. Larson
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Source: Netgalley
Rating: 5 Stars

Synopsis:

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

My Thoughts

A brilliant new adventure full of exotic locales, magic spells, daring sword fights, and a devilishly handsome prince!

The setting and world building was brilliant. Set in the jungle with deadly opponents on all sides this story really keeps you on edge. You soon find though that that the most deadly enemies lurk from within. The descriptions and action scenes had a deadly beautiful quality to them. I was easily lost in this world of romance, danger, and friendship.

So many memorable characters in this book, but some of my favorites are Marcel, Damian, Rylan, and of course Alex (Alexa).

Alexa didn't have an easy life and from a young age she had to make some tough decisions. Which is why she came to be among the Prince's Guard disguised as a boy. I really admired her determination and strength. Keeping such a secret for so long would be unimaginably hard. Luckily she is able to make some friends and gets to do the one thing she loves most, fight. She is good at it and throughout the book it is the on thing she holds onto even when everything else seems so uncertain.

Marcel is Alexa's twin brother and the one who came up with the plan to disguise her as a boy. He has been there for Alexa through everything and it is plain to see how much these two care for one another. He was sweet character that I wished I could have seen more of.

Rylan is one of my absolute favorite characters in this story. He is so sweet and kind. As well as extremely loyal and fiercely dedicated. He always knew what to do to cheer Alexa up. He was the kind of friend you always want by your side.

Last, but certainly not least is Damian, the prince. He was a little hard to figure out at first, but once you got to know him he was so much more than what he appeared. He was definitely one of the more interesting characters in the book with a lot of passion, intelligence, and secrets. I loved his banter with Alexa and found these two hilarious to watch.

I could not put the book down and am just sad that I will have to wait a long while for the next installment. A big thanks to this debut author for writing this new and addicting series!!

About
I love writing, reading, and dessert--but the order varies by the day. I wrote my first book in second grade about a woman who had a premature baby, complete with a "to scale" drawing of the baby's size--while my mom was pregnant. To say I was a bit precocious is putting it lightly. Now that I'm an adult, I write books for teens that have magic and romance and kick-butt girls (and very few premature babies). I live in Utah with my husband, two young sons and baby girl. I write during naptime and the hours when most people are sleeping. My husband claims I should have a degree in "the art of multitasking." On occasion you will find me hiding in a bubble bath with a book and some Swedish Fish. I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary and my YA debut DEFY is coming January '14 from Scholastic!

My Thoughts

You never know who the true enemy is until its too late.

An action packed paranormal story of one woman's quest to find the truth in an otherworldly and dangerous world. The world building was very well done and I loved the new take on vampires. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue in this book as well and I had a great time figuring everything out with Caroline.

The Deamhan are an interesting race that although very similar to vampire's are actually a new type of paranormal creature with their own rules and needs. The author did a great job of introducing these new creatures and showing us their lifestyle without getting to wordy. The imagery she used was beautiful and drew me into the story, making it seem like I was actually there.

Caroline is a strong and courageous young woman who wants answers. I loved her spirit and tenacity and how she never gave up. She is loyal to a fault and will stop at nothing to achieve justice for her mother. I really enjoyed getting to know her more and seeing how she grew throughout the story.

This is an action packed paranormal thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seats!

Kira Hardy, M.D. is a brilliant, hardworking internal med resident with big secrets. But when Ashor asks for aid after a brutal daemon attack, she is sucked into his dangerous, secret world. My Thoughts

A love beyond words.

This story interweaves magic, mystery, action, and romance to create a spellbinding read that you will never forget. The imagery was beautiful and captivating, really drawing you into the story. The world building was unique and done perfectly. I loved the way the mythology was used in the story and how everything fit together in the end.

The romance was also nicely done and paced. There was no insta love, but plenty of chemistry between the two main characters.

Kira is a gifted healer, but she is forced to hide her gifts away. She cannot deny the call to heal completely though. She uses her magic sparingly to help those in need. Kira is a kind soul and does her best to help others. However, she is no wilting violet. Kira has no problems with fighting back and doing what needs to be done. She has a strong will and is a great match for ashor.

Ashor is an alpha male with a heart of gold. He is interested in Kira, but fears the consequences. I loved the interactions between Kira and Ashor the best. They were so much fun together and their banter was hilarious. Ashor is noble and just. He does what is best for the good of all. Even when there is a great cost to himself.

This is an exciting paranormal romance that will have you on the edge of your seat at every turn of the page!

The Jack prophesied: If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward. When a second carried on for infinity, every creature in Wonderland would tip their Hat to the misfit girl with a Boy’s name (or was it a boy with a Girl’s name?) who’d end the Reign of Terror. However, it all hinged on the One-Eyed Hare being able to convince an uninspirable Heir that the impossible was indeed possible—like stopping time—and that Love was worth a Beheading.

In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

My Thoughts

An enchanting tale that will have you thinking about it long after you turn the last page.

This story has everything intrigue, adventure, romance, and life lessons that you will carry with you forever. While this story has elements of the old “Alice in Wonderland” it is far different with a theme all its own. The story deals with many different issues that we all face in life, but especially forgiveness. I really liked how the story showed that you must work hard for your happily ever after and that even though things don't always turn out the way you planned, love is always worth it.

Alice Mae is no wilting violet. She is strong, determined, and most definitely a fighter. I loved her spirit and seeing how she was able to grow as a person throughout the story. She is by no means perfect and makes mistakes, but she tries her best to make things right.

Ryley is no prince charming, but he loves with all his heart. He is an interesting and complicated character that I loved figuring out. The romance was also nicely done and not too over the top. What I liked most about Ryley and Alice is that they saw each others faults and still loved each other.

This is an moving and provocative story that you won't want to miss!

Interview

What inspired you to write Death of the Mad Hatter?

My inspiration actually came from my cover artist. Josh Wilcoxon, a photographer by trade, has a knack at shooting fantasy characters but putting his own personal twist on them. He did a trial shoot for Alice in Wonderland, and I was “stalking” his website and simply fell in love with his artwork.

Do you have a favorite character from the original Alice in Wonderland?

The Mad Hatter. I loved just how completely bonkers he was and yet was still as happy as a clam. He wasn’t afraid of letting people see just how nuts he was… and everyone is all a little insane.
“Have I gone mad?
“I’m afraid so, but let me tell you something, the best people usually are.”

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

What are some of your favorite books/authors?

I’m so incredibly in love with the Sookie Stackhouse Series. Eric Northman? Yes please!

How did you get in to writing? Honestly, I didn’t want to shovel the driveway. (Yep, not lying) I had just finished a few authors I was following and it was in the middle of winter. We just got blasted by an unrelenting blizzard. The snow drifts were over my head. And, I’d already destroyed three shovels and an ice pick, so I wasn’t going to go out again until the sun came out and melted everything away…. Huh, funny how my life would have turned out differently if I would have bought a snow blower.

Did you listen to music while you wrote the book and if so, who were some of the artists?

Oh absolutely! My music changes depending on my mood. Often my books change too depending on the radio. I can listen to Eminem one minute and then Missy Higgins and then to Kesha.

How long did it take to write Death of the Mad Hatter? Last year five of my novels were published. (no, I didn’t have much of a life) so I decided that I would take things slower for 2014. Death of the Mad Hatter will be my second novel of the year, taking me six months to write. My shortest novel took eight whole days to write and my longest ten months. But, without books I’d be the crazy lady in the corner talking to herself. At least as a writer, I can giggle and blame it on my book boyfriend. (Does that sound any better?) J

Coffee or Hot Chocolate?

I take my high blood pressure pills to fuel my coffee addiction.

Did any of your characters give you a difficult time while writing this book?

Oh my characters always misbehave! I have this wonderfully great, epically genius idea for a story line and then my characters will get bored or insist the story take a different direction. When I’m writing, I have little to no clue how the story will unfold.

Is there any character in particular that you enjoyed writing about the most?

Alice Mae. (Named after my grandmother, btw) She’s a little cooky and difficult. I kept wanting her to be a “nice girl” but she insisted on getting her hands dirty. Thus, Alice Mae in Death of the Mad Hatter is much like Wednesday in the Adam’s Family.

Are there any other projects you are working on that you would like to tell us about?

I’m currently working on the final novel of the Fate Trilogy. (think classical mythology with a modern twist)  The first took books are out: Forgotten, #1, and Twisted Games #2. But, I created a bit of a mess for my main goddess to fix, so I’ve been second-guessing my series title. Trilogy? I hope to get everything solved so my publisher doesn’t get mad at me, lol.

My Thoughts

Get whisked away to an new land where romance blooms!

This story is packed full of drama, action, intrigue, and some sexy sheikh's. I had a great time getting engrossed in the culture and seeing how two seemingly completely different people can meet and fall in love. The imagery was beautiful and really helped to make you feel as though you were really there.

The romance was nicely paced and I loved seeing theses two slowly fall in love. Despite their obvious differences they were able to find common ground and build a solid foundation for their relationship. This was very good since their relationship tested many times throughout the book.

Rashid was an honorable man who sticked to his decisions and didn't allow anyone to get in his way. He was a fascinating character and I loved seeing him banter with Angelina. I had a great time getting to know him along with Angelina.

Angelina was a will full young woman who was very used to being independent. So the idea of giving up her career to stay with Rashid was understandably daunting. I admired her spirit and tenacity even when the odds weren't in her favor. She definitely wasn't the type to give up easily.

My Thoughts

A Viking Marriage that is just as wild as the Viking himself.
I was so excited to read my first Viking story and even more so when I found out how spunky and independent the heroine would be. This story was way more than I expected. It was full of not only a charming romance, but tons of action and intrigue as well. The setting itself was beautiful and was the perfect backdrop for a Viking romance. There were a lot of different kinds of characters in this story and I had a great time figuring everyone out and finding out who was friend and who was foe.
Kaireen was stubborn, willful, and brave. She was the perfect match for our Viking hero Bram. She was forced into a marriage to a complete stranger, but she didn't allow others to dictate her life and fought back. I loved her spirit and loved seeing her interactions with Bram. They were both a great couple and brought out the best in each other.
Bram was a ferocious Viking, but he had a soft spot for Kaireen and it showed. He was a fun character and I liked learning more about him and seeing him woo Kaireen in his own way. He definitely knew how to get under her skin.

My Thoughts
Magic, mystery, and dangerous enemies this book has all the ingredients for an exciting new romance.
The setting was darkly beautiful and the imagery brought it to life. I really enjoyed the world building in this book and discovering all of its secrets. The rules and creatures in this world were very interesting and had me captivated, especially Brock.
Brock was mysterious and had a lot of depth to him. He has been cursed to take the life of anyone he touches. I grew to love and care for this character, so I felt his pain when he finally had the cure so close, but so far away. He has really been through a lot and I admired his strength when things got tough. Most of all I admired how he could protect Celeste, even at the cost to himself.
Celeste was a woman who knew what she wanted and went after it. It was amazing how resilient she was and  how she was able to be so strong after being a prisoner for so long. I loved learning more about her and seeing her relationship with Brock blossom. They are so great together and you could really feel the chemistry between them.

Meeting Jett was  like a drug. Dangerous. Addictive. And better forbidden. In his game,  there’s a high price to be paid. But how much is too much?

Brooke Stewart, a realtor in New York, was never in love until she met the green-eyed,  sexy-as-sin, six-foot-two sex god, Jett. The man to whom she  surrendered. The man who hurt her once only to conquer her heart  again.

Sexy, handsome, and  arrogant Jett Mayfield knows he has found his match. Brooke is like no  other woman he’s ever met and he has every intention of keeping her in  his bed.
Their future seems full  of promise...until the past is catching up with them and dark secrets  threaten to destroy their lives. Soon they realize that to love means to lose, and some choices are harder than others.
When everything comes crashing down, can mistakes be amended…or will he lose her forever?
A woman who surrendered to love.

A man who would do anything to protect her.

Two lives that are about to be tested…and the last secrets laid bare.

My Thoughts

The past has a way of catching up to you.

For Brooke and Jett life is beautiful. It seems as if all of their problems are solved and they can finally just enjoy being together. However things from their past are turning up and making there otherwise blissful life into a living nightmare. Will they be able to handle these new hurdles or will everything simply be too much.

I really enjoyed exploring the relationship between Jett and Brooke in more depth. In this book they have to deal with a lot of new stressful situations and though it has the potential to pull them apart, if they can make it through this it will ultimately make their relationship stronger.

Brooke is a tough no nonsense heroine that I love to read about. However, I did like that she had her vulnerable moments because it made her seem more real. I always enjoy the interactions between Jett and Brooke because they are both such stubborn and willful people.

Jett is your typical alpha male, but he can be gentle and sweet. He has a rough exterior, but does his best to keep Brooke safe. I liked getting to see more about his past and see him grow as a person in this book.

Daughter of Sherwood by Laura Strickland

Daughter of Sherwood - Laura Strickland

Title: Daughter of Sherwood

Author: Laura Strickland

Synopsis:

Laura Strickland’s new historical romance book Daughter of Sherwood, published by The Wild Rose Press, will be released on November 1, 2013.
Raised as a scullery maid in Nottingham Castle, Wren has no idea she is the daughter of the legendary Robin Hood. When she is forced to defend herself against the unwanted advances of an influential man, she flees the castle and finds refuge in Sherwood Forest. It is then she learns a powerful secret: she has a destiny as a guardian of Sherwood, charged with the responsibility of defending its ancient magic.
Since Robin's death many years before, his supporters have kept his legend alive.  Now one of the three guardians holding the spell has died. With two young men, Sparrow and Martin, Wren must form a new bond strong enough to protect Sherwood and continue her father’s fight.  Drawn equally to Martin’s warrior spirit and Sparrow’s gentle strength, she finds it nearly impossible to choose between duty and love.
Laura takes us on a journey into the world of Robin Hood's daughter, where we experience her struggle to accept her identity and the demands of her father's legacy.  Along with Wren, we learn that what is loved in life can never be lost, and that great love is worth the price paid.  For at last, when Martin is captured and held at Nottingham Castle, the path becomes clear for Wren and she finds the strength to become the woman she was born to be, the Daughter of Sherwood.
Daughter of Sherwood is book one of The Guardians of Sherwood Trilogy.

My Thoughts

Sometimes greatness is thrust upon us.
Wren never knew about her famous  father until now nor could she imagine the adventure that awaits her. Full of  magic, mystery, and intrigue this is a page turner you will not want to miss.  The author did a great job of keeping with the original image of Robin Hood  while adding her own unique spin to the tale. I had a great time reminiscing  about old characters and meeting plenty of new ones along the way.
Wren  is courageous, headstrong, and as beautiful as she is kind. I really admired in  ability to take things in stride and her willingness to sacrifice for the good  of everyone. She is a beautiful character both inside and out and someone I  would love to have as a friend!
There are also two new characters that  were both so fun to read about. The first is Martin who is a potential love  interest. He is brave, strong, and charming. However, his motives are uncertain  and he has many secrets that may or not be harmful to Wren.
The second,  and my personal favorite, is Sparrow. He is the kind, thoughtful, and friend  that Wren can turn to for anything. I loved reading about him and really enjoyed  his sweet nature. He was also very brave and would do anything for  Wren.
Romance wasn't the only thing on their minds however. There were  still many dangers that Wren needed to face. The hardest part would be figuring  out who was friend and who was foe.
For a romantic and heart pounding  adventure check out the "Daughter of Sherwood".

My Thoughts

Discover the impossible with Leah and Gareth.

The author once again does an amazing job setting up the mysteries and leaving just enough hints and clues along the way to keep you guessing. I was enthralled by the exotic locations. I really enjoyed discovering new secrets along the way.

Most of all I enjoyed reading more about Leah and Gareth. Throughout the book we get to see as their relationship grows even further and even gets tested along the way. Everyone has secrets and Gareth's just may tear them apart.

I also really liked finding out more about Leah's father. They have a very interesting relationship and I really enjoyed seeing the different dynamics within it. Their interactions with one another were interesting as well and definitely brought out a lot of drama and turmoil.

New characters also brought a lot of drama as well. Especially, the new woman in the group. She is full of secrets and teaming up with her could either help them or destroy them.

Let us travel with Leah and Gareth on another fun filled adventure!

My Thoughts

Who wouldn't want to be a mermaid?

Yara never even believed in mermaids until the day a hurricane hit her island home and turned her whole world upside down. Now she is in the middle of a battle between two different creatures Selkies and the merfolk. Both have a different idea on how she can save them, neither is good for her. The world building was fantastic and I was just immersed into this amazing world of not only mermaids, but a ton of amazing new creatures that I had a wonderful time getting to know. The way these two different cultures dealt with things and how they interacted with one another was so interesting.

Yara was definitely a character I could relate with. I also liked that her reactions were realistic and that when things got really crazy she didn't just accept them she actually freaked out and wanted answers. I feel that just makes it seem more real to me. She wasn't a whiny character though, She fought for herself. Even when her world was in chaos, she didn't let others rule her life she made sure everyone knew how she felt and didn't take crap from nobody.

Treygan was so much fun to read about. He was complex and compelling. I really liked his determination and loyalty to his people. He really was a good person and was willing to do anything to keep his people safe. Treygan was also a great match for Yara.

The romance was sweet and built up slowly. I really liked the "I hate to love you" type of thing going on. At first they were both against each other, but over time they got to know one another and slowly came to care for one another.

Dive into a whole new world of adventure in the deep blue!

My Thoughts
What if you lived in a world where the paranormal was normal?

I really enjoyed the unique premise of this book and the well thought out world. Living in a world where being normal is looked down upon is definitely a twist. The author handled the different paranormal aspects really well.

The romance was nicely done and very sweet, but it didn't take up the entire story which I really liked. I could definitely feel the chemistry between the characters.

I also liked how the theme of growing up and finding yourself was dealt with. You could really relate to Cassie and most of all I really liked her courage to be herself and to live her own life outside of the expectations of everyone else.

The family dynamics in the story were also very interesting and I enjoyed seeing how Cassie interacted with them.

Mystery and suspense were prevalent throughout the story and had me on the edge of my seat as I tried to figure out what was going on right along with Cassie.

This is a fun and interesting new twist on the paranormal and I highly recommend it!
